My Love of Leonbergers

Author: Sarah Gaziano | Date: April 12, 2012

My husband and I don’t agree on much. In fact, we don’t really have anything in common at all. He’s into sports, I love me some cheese puffs and a good TV show. He’s into hipster music, and I’m more into classic 70’s rock. He likes all things colorful and artistic; gray is my favorite color.

One of the most common disagreements we have is about dog breeds.

We currently have Eddy, who belonged to David, my husband. He’s a Rhodesian Ridgeback mix, and I have never been in love with the way smooth coated dogs look. I like fuzzy, huge dogs. A dog that doesn’t weigh over 100 pounds just doesn’t appeal to me. Normally Rhody’s are big, but our Eddy is a little squirt of a dog. I love him, but when it comes to looks, he just doesn’t do it for me.

My dream dog is a Leonberger. They are very large and very fluffy. I saw two of them on a vacation once. They were walking around the corner, and it was love at first site. I tapped my mom on the shoulder to ask her what these giant bear looking things were. As soon as she smiled and said, “Honey, those are Leonbergers”, I was hooked.

I can’t really explain why I have this love, I just know that I do, but it got me thinking that all of us have a certain breed that we love. If you haven’t found your breed of choice, look into the giant Leonberger. The theory is that the Leonberger is a crossover between a Newfoundland and a St. Bernard. Apparently they were used as farm dogs and as companions for royalty. As far as temperament goes, they seem pretty chilled out. I’ve never actually met a Leonberger besides those two I saw many years ago, but I’m just talking about looks here.

I’m sure all of you have a breed you love based on looks.

Share them here and remember, you can’t help who you fall in love with.

From the very start, AnimalSense had nothing but my interest and my dog’s in mind.
