The Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) recently released their rankings for 2012’s best state for animal protection.
That is amazing news for animals here!
This ranking is based on fifteen different categories and this group runs extensive reports. This year, they added a new category in the assessment process. They are now taking into consideration the passage of the “Ag Gag” law. Per ALDF’s website: “These laws, propagated by the corporate agriculture lobby, aim to conceal animal abuse, food safety risks and illegal working conditions from consumers by making it illegal to video record or photograph at an agricultural facilities.” This law is a HUGE step backward for animals so it’s wonderful that ALDF is now considering this law in their report.
The good news is that over the past five years many states have had big improvements in their laws. All of these statistics come from ALDF’s website:
These improvements included:
Expanding the range of protection for animals
Providing stiffer penalties for offenders
Strengthening standard of care for animals
Reporting of animal cruelty cases by vets and other professionals
Strengthening and provisions on the sale and possession of exotic animals.
