Tammy cannot remember a
time when animals were not a part of her life. She smiles just thinking how
every interest she has had has so perfectly flowed into another rewarding experience.
Her fondness for pets as a child led her to pursue a degree in Biological
Sciences from Northern
Illinois University,
and to an internship at the John G. Shedd Aquarium. This, in turn, led her to
Central Africa where she spent two and a half years as a Peace Corps Volunteer
in Gabon,
teaching local farmers how to raise fish and plant gardens. On her return,
Tammy joined the Brookfield Zoo as a keeper/trainer--and thus began her love of
training!
Before joining AnimalSense,
Tammy taught dog obedience classes for over six years in the Chicagoland area
at PetSmart, PETCO, and through her own private business, “Gone to the
Dogs." In addition, Tammy worked for Chicago’s
largest no-kill shelter, PAWS Chicago,
as their Adoption Program Manager. She was responsible for the intake and
evaluation of more than 500 animals rescued and re-homed by PAWS Chicago each year.
Working with, fostering and rehabilitating shelter dogs gave Tammy first hand
experience to teach AnimalSense's Welcome Home class- specifically
designed for rescued dogs.
Tammy continues to work
with shelters all over North America each day
as the Sales Coordinator for PetPoint shelter software. Tammy has a very
special place in her heart for rescued animals, which goes to prove you can
take the girl out of the shelter, but you cannot take the love of animals out
of the girl!
Free moments Tammy has are
spent with her husband, Kevin, her two dogs Rumi (Husky/Shepherd Mix), and
Riley (Shepherd Mix), both rescued from shelters, and her two cats, Jack and
Minnie (whom she brought home from Africa). Tammy and Kevin are expecting their
first non-furry child this August! We
all wish her well and look forward to her return to the classroom next year.
